Review: I’ve received a couple of e-mails from readers telling me to try out Cafecito. All of the e-mails have told me the same thing. It’s new, it’s cheap and it’s unbelievably good. All of the e-mails were right. After spending Thanksgiving in Wisconsin and returning home to a virtually empty kitchen, I decided that I needed something quick and satisfying. Cafecito did the trick.

If you had asked me where to get a good Cuban sandwich prior to Saturday night, I would have probably told you Miami. Though the climate of Miami may make this sound like a perfectly welcome option, I’m happy to report that you no longer have to pay jet-fuel surcharges to get one (unless, of course, you don’t live in Miami or Chicago).

If I were Oprah, Cafecito’s Cubano sandwich would be one of my new favorite things. Hell, even though I’m not Oprah, it is one of my new favorite things. A simple sandwich with roast pork, ham, pickles, Swiss cheese and mustard on Cuban bread, the Cubano’s flavor shines through due to the double mojo treatment that the pork receives. First, the pork is marinated in Cafecito’s homemade mojo, then portioned. When each sandwich is ordered, the pork is then quickly re-basted with a splash of mojo on the grill, folded into the sandwich and the entire creation is warmed and pressed in a plancha to marry all of the flavors and create a satisfying crunch in the bread. This simple, but carefully carried out process makes a sandwich well worth a trip to the loop.

Cafecito’s natural ingredients and the staff’s passion for good food provides a sublimely tasty sandwich well worth the fiver in your pocket. I’ll be back to Cafecito many times for not only the food, but also the genuine friendly service and, of course, the fantastic Cuban music playing on the stereo. Was that Los Zafiros I heard? I think it was!

Thank you to everyone who urged me to try out Cafecito. Maybe I’ll see you there sometime!
